Terminal Island: A Community Lost
Acrylic Ink on Poster Board
ART 244 - Sheehan
The Japanese community of Terminal Island off Long Beach California was introduced to us in the form of an article. After reading and diving deeper into the tragic story of a community erased, I truly wanted to evoke the semblance of a wonderful thing lost. The little girl at the Tory Gate, which mimics the memorial that stands in Long Beach today, looks through to the past to the way things were before WWII. This window clashes with the modern look of Long Beach harbor, with towering cranes and choppy seas, a place where this bright community no longer exists.

Each slide was photographed by me and painted throughout the month of March as a part of a 30 days of Anatomy Art Challenge. I saw these slides in my Anatomy class and was captivated by the beauty of the parts of our body that we do not even think about. Each complex structure is perfectly suited for its function and yet so expertly designed, it truly inspired me to paint these windows into our bodies.

This lovely comic depicts my Lola, grandma, facing off with a rattlesnake that we found in her backyard. Without even flinching, she squared off with the poisonous snake armed with only a shovel and bottle of bleach. When the dust settled, she stood victorious saving and slightly scaring everyone present.
On March 26, 2020, my Lola passed away during quarantine. Unable to see her in her last moments was a trying time for my family. A way I got through that time was writing down all the crazy times we had with her, this story being one of them.
