A Granddaughter's Shaded Prayer
Collage
ART 110 - Hanson
We learned about Retablos in my ART 110 course. My grandmother is catholic and has numerous shrines, offerings, and prayer cards throughout her room. Though you can always find her with a Saint card or cross in her pocket, you can always find her trying to go outside mask-less. During these great times were of trouble, this work was a commentary on my grandmother's ability to seek protection from God by prayer instead of by wearing a face mask.

A Shuffle of Monet's La Japonaise
Colored pencil
ART 110 - Hanson

After viewing Monet's La Japonaise in person I was struck by two thoughts, 'Whoa' and 'Uh oh. A controversial piece, La Japonaise, was made to suit the fads of the time period it was created during. Low on funds and attempting to appeal to the French masses, Monet created this piece to tide him over economically. Nowadays, in a time where his form of cultural appropriation would be viewed as a serious issue, I sought to shuffle Monet's piece into a piece of my own as a way to comment on the way Monet took aspects of a culture that he thought would be profitable and placed them excessively throughout his painting in order to garner more interest. With so much material placed in his painting did the items he selected ultimately matter? If they did, then shuffling them should have a serious impact on his message.
